Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #3

When a fissure anomaly is detected aboard the Binary Stasis Twelve Dyson Sphere, it’s up to Peter Quill and the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop it! At least they would if it weren’t for a group of super powerful religious zealots known as the Cardinals who are able to use their very thoughts as weapons getting in their way! As the team and Cardinals do battle on the sphere, back on Knowhere, the teams current “headquarters“, resident empath Mantis and the amnesic stranger known as Major Victory find their selves under attack from the mysterious Starhawk. As the Major and Starhawk do battle across the base, they destroy a few random teleportation batteries thus trapping the Guardians on the Dyson Sphere. With the fissure anomaly fast approaching and the Cardinal's unrelenting attack, will the team be able to stop the disaster in time to rescue the spheres inhabitants, and if not, will they be able to get off the sphere before it‘s too late? Either way, it’s all action packed cosmic goodness in that grand Marvel fashion!

Marvel has found the ultimate writing/art team with Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Paul Pelletier and Rick Magyar! This is an amazingly well written story that will grab you from the very beginning and leave you wanting more at the end! Abnett and Lanning do an incredible job of giving each member of the team ample screen time and giving new readers a chance to see who each of these characters are. I love the way the writers intersperse the action sequences with scenes of the mission debriefings from the team, similar to what Spike Lee did in the movie “The Inside Man”. And the art from Paul Pelletier and Rick Magyar is absolutely stunning! I have had very small problems with Pelletier’s art in the past but those problems were quickly laid to rest with this issue . Pelletier pencils some really truly incredible action sequences here! I especially enjoyed his design of the Cardinals, which reminded me a lot of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings movie. To me, this is one of those comics where everything just seems to click. With issues one and two being reprinted as a one-shot soon, now is a great time to jump aboard what looks like is going to be one heck of a fun ride!
