Review: The Mighty Avengers #16

The Secret Invasion continues in this book, explaining how and when heroes were replaced. The Mighty Avengers has been a fun story and Brian Michael Bendis has done an excellent job of setting up Secret Invasion. The story is solid and well told, but will not do much to dissuade detractors of the event. It is set entirely in the past, not really adding any forward motion to a story critics are beginning to say is unfolding too slowly and not paying off as much as it was hyped. Readers of the Secret Invasion will be interested in this book primarily for the gaps it fills. The interesting thing about this issue is that it works as a stand-alone issue, telling it’s entire story within the pages. However, it does rely heavily on its connection to what's going on in Secret Invasion. The biggest reason to read this book is the art. Khoi Pham does an excellent job on this issue. There was even a brief moment when he reminded me a little of Frank Miller’s work on Daredevil. Beyond that I loved the facial expressions and the way he draws people. This book is beautifully rendered.

Although the tone of this review is a little cautionary, I gotta say I'm really enjoying the whole Secret Invasion thing. I had a blast reading this issue, and I can't wait to see what comes next. This book could be read and enjoyed by any comic fan, but it gets my strongest recommendation for readers of Secret Invasion.
