Review(s): Patsy Walker: Hellcat #1

We have not one, but TWO reviews for Patsy Walker: Hellcat #1. I'm telling you, this issue blew me away. I didn't know what to expect, but damn if I wasn't entertained. But enough from me. Now, you don't have to take my word for it (it is only my Pick of the Week after all). Instead, let Mike and Steve tell you that this is an issue that is not to be missed! And when you're done reading, enjoy the beautiful preview pages, where David Lafuente and John Rauch deftly bring Kathryn Immonen's script to life.

First, Mike's review:

After spending time on Titan and a long vacation in Hell, where’s the next destination of choice for today’s modern super heroine? How about middle of nowhere Alaska! Leaping from the pages of Avengers: The Initiative, Patsy Walker, better known as former Avenger and Defenders member Hellcat, takes center stage in her own 5 issue mini series from writer Kathryn Immonen (Marvel Comics Presents) and penciler David Lafuente (X-Men: Divided We Stand). Needing a team to protect Alaska from super powered threats, Iron Man calls upon Initiative reservist Hellcat to head up her own team as Alaska’s protectors. The only problem is, the team is only approved for one member. But hey it’s Alaska! What‘s the worst that can happen, right?

Patsy Walker: Hellcat #1 is a good start to what looks like is going to be a fun mini! Immonen gets the story moving fairly quickly, and her quirky dialog keeps things interesting. Lafuente’s mangaesque art style is a great compliment to this lighter comic story. All-in-all, this is a nice break from the big events that are currently filling our long boxes. Fans of the current Amazing Spider-Man series should most certainly give this book a look!

And from Steve:
From page one, David Lafuente’s artwork on this book is simply beautiful to look at, and don’t be misled by thinking I refer to cheesecake renditions of the title character (In fact, Patsy is drawn less ‘heroically voluptuous’ when in her skintight costume). Lafuente’s page visuals, fashion design, lush backgrounds and occasional psychedelic ‘wishful thinking /fantasy’ panels keep this book interesting eye-candy from page to page. John Rauch’s color art matches perfectly, depicting a range of hot surreal sunset-like lighting to the cold colors of frozen wastelands.

Kathryn Immonen presents an interesting plot both grounding Patsy in the current Marvel Universe with an Iron Man appearance as the catalyst for an Initiative mission and at the same time taking her way out of her element, leading into a ‘frozen tundra’ story that seems suited for an old issue of Alpha Flight or Claremont/Sienkiewiecz’s New Mutants. By the end of this initial issue, it’s too soon to judge the choice in story locale and direction, and while the dialog is pretty weak in it’s attempt to be whimsical, I’m intrigued enough with the story and so pleasantly surprised with the art that I’ll be picking up future issues to see where this story goes.

Avengers #144 - "The Hellcat Cometh" - was the very first comic book I ever read, and have been enamored with Patsy Walker ever since.

This current story is flat-out fun - perfect pace and gorgeous art. Patsy should rejoin the Avengers to complement Spidey's humor. (She's a redhead too - uhoh) ;)
