Review: Dead of Night: Devil-Slayer #1

War is hell. We have all heard the stories. For Sergent Danny Sylva, the hell at home is not quite as bad as the hell that is the war in Iraq. Upon returning for his third tour of duty, Danny is sent on a mission to rescue a captured soldier from his unit. The mission was going like clockwork until all hell starts breaking loose. Sergent Danny Sylva soon finds out war is not the only thing hellish in Iraq.

Dead of Night: Devil-Slayer is an excellent start to this four issue mini series from horror novelist Brian Keene (The Rising, Dark Hollow) and artist Chris Samnee (Daredevil: Blood of the Tarantula). Storywise, this book really threw me for a loop. As I was getting into the story I quickly forgot the title and started thinking to myself "this looks like it's going to be a really good war story". Then I hit the last page and things took a 180 that completely took me by surprise. Keene does an excellent job of getting you attached to the character of Danny Sylva. Life hasn't been that easy for Danny the past few months and even though he was discharged from the military, you get the feeling that he almost has no other option but to reenlist and return to Iraq for another tour. The issue may take a little bit of time getting to the action, but the strength of Keene's story definately makes up for any missing action.

The gritty art style from Chris Samnee really fits this story well. His strong pencils convey great emotion in the faces of each of the characters. The colors from June Chung are a perfect compliment to Samnees pencils. Page after page, this was a really nice book to look at!

Fantastic art and a great story make this a really excellent read in my opinion. Keene takes the theme of war and throws in a horror element to create a story that really has me wondering what is going to happen next. All in all, this looks like it's going to be a very cool mini!
