Review: New Warriors #15

New Warriors #15 is a Secret Invasion tie in and the action really starts to pick up in this issue. Night Thrasher's identity is finally revealed, along with some other related plot lines. All this and some nice battle scenes. This issue stands as one of my favorite in this series so far. The best part is that although some major subplots are tied up, the end of the story leaves you with just enough to keep you coming back for the next issue.

I'm not real familiar with the work of writer Kevin Grevioux, but he seems to have a handle on the characters in the series and how he wants to flesh them out. There is a distinct direction this story is headed and when reading the story you get the feeling that hidden things are occurring. My biggest complaint is with the series in general rather then with the issue alone. I think the pacing of the stories has been a little off. For instance, to be finding out the identity of the leader on issue 15 seems like a long time to wait for something that has been played as a fairly major subplot. I suspect my complaint has more to do with the fact that I read the title on a monthly basis and the story is told with the intention of being collected in a trade format, making my complaint a very minor one.

The art is done by Koi Turnbull on pencils and Sal Regla on inks, and I have to say I really enjoy the way these two work together. I really enjoy the fact that this is not yet another comic attempting to do the photo-realism thing. The style is cartoony with strong contrast between the lights and darks. Stylistcally the work reminds me of Scott McDaniel's work on titles like Nightwing and Richard Dragon.

New Warriors #15 was a fun read with some connection to Secret Invasion, but it wasn't bogged down by that connection. The Invasion plays as a backdrop that serves as a catalyst for the story rather then as a pivotal plot point. Whether you're reading Secret Invasion or not you can enjoy this story.
Recommended.
