Review: Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe

What if instead of being killed by the mafia, Frank Castle's family would have been accidentally killed in the crossfire of a major superhero battle? In this new take on the Punisher's origin, Garth Ennis gives us a glimpse at the Frank Castle of an alternate Marvel universe. Get ready for an all out superhero massacre in this reprint of the original 1995 story!

The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe is one of those comics that just didn't really do anything for me. I'm not calling it a bad story and I didn't hate the comic, it just didn't really have any effect on me. Maybe I was trying to get something more out of this than I was supposed to or maybe I missed the whole theme to this book all together, but this story just didn't click with me. I think the thing that kept this story from working was that none of the heroes seemed to be themselves, with the exception of maybe Daredevil. When Frank executed them, it didn't feel like he was killing "our" version of the hero. It was just some schmo in a Spidey or Captain America outfit. I just didn't feel any attachment to these characters to really care if they lived or died and maybe I wasn't supposed to. I might be trying to make this book more serious than it is supposed to be, but even trying to read it as just a fun read I didn't really find it that enjoyable.

Artwise, I thought Doug Braithwaite's pencil's were pretty decent. Their were several inkers with this book, and I think that maybe at times the art seemed a little inconsistent but overall I liked some of Braithwaite's images. It was definitely nice seeing the X-Men in their early 90's costumes again! There were a couple of times I thought Braithwaite made the heroes look like they had Skrull chins, so I thought that was kind of funny considering things currently going on in the regular Marvel U. Maybe they were planning out Secret Invasion back in 1995, and are reprinting this book to give new clues on some of the heroes currently being portrayed by Skrulls. Just a thought. In conclusion, I can't really give this book a high recommendation. Some people might really dig it and have a blast with it, but it just wasn't for me.
