Review: Secret Invasion: Thor #1

The Skrulls have just made a big mistake. They thought it would be fun to use the God of Thunder's good friend, Beta Ray Bill, as a living missile to attack Asgard with. That probably wasn't the best idea the Skrulls have ever had. Secret Invasion: Thor #1 has the Skrulls bringing the invasion of Earth to Thor's home on Asgard.

Written by Matt Fraction (Uncanny X-Men, Invincible Iron Man) and beautifully illustrated by Doug Braithwaite (The Punisher), this issue doesn't give us a lot of Skrull action, but the story really sets up what looks to be some exciting upcoming issues. The story pits Donald Blake trying to balance helping out the people of his adopted town of Broxton and defending Asgard from the imminent Skrull invasion. Matt Fraction does a really great job of keeping the story moving and getting things setup, but what I find that I like most about this story is his dialog. I really dig the voice that Fraction gives to Donald Blake and Thor. He keeps Thor sounding God-like without over doing it with the old English, and he makes Blake sound like a truly caring individual that you can attach to and root for.

Doug Braithwaite art in this issue is just amazing. His pencils are slightly rough and and are not real heavy with inks, if any inks at all, but they still look absolutely gorgeous! The detail of his pages is absolutely stunning. Braithwaite utilizes every bit of space on the page with imagery and doesn't leave anything wasted. All around, I thought this was a fantastic issue. Excellent writing and beautiful artwork equal a big A+ from me!
