The Skrulls have landed in San Fransisco and believe the city will be an easy capture. With no known superhero teams in the area, who could possibly oppose them? If the Skrulls would have checked their intel, they would have known the X-Men had recently relocated to the area and are not about to hand over the city without a fight!
Superstar writer Mike Carey (X-Men: Legacy) and artist Cary Nord (Ultimate Human) deliver what I believe to be one of the best Secret Invasion stories yet! This book really helps make the event feel like a full on military invasion! The opening pages with the Skrull drops ships coming in were just fantastic! I love the fact that the Skrulls seemed to be going into this assault with a battle plan to take the city. This didn't just feel like an all out attack with no thought behind it. When the Skrulls touch down in the streets, they have a mission and a plan of attack to back it up. When the X-Men hit the scene, it was the same thing. Cyclops took control of the situation and really showed that he is a natural leader. This issue was definitely action packed from start to finish!
The art from Cary Nord was pretty solid as well. There were a couple of panels were I thought Cyclops looked a bit "weird", but for the most part I thought it fit the story well. Nord drew some really great actions scenes, particularly at the beginning with the start of the Skrull assault. And I really dig the way Cord draws Hank McCoy. He seems to mix the old Beast with the newer catlike Beast which I think could please both parties of the Beast camp. In conclusion, of the last two big events (Secret Invasion and World War Hulk), the X-Men tie ins have really be standing out to me. Though the X-Men usually seem to have small roles in these big events, the writers of these series seem to really be making the most of the books they are given! I highly recommend picking this issue up!
