Due to overwhelming demand for the sold-out Guardians of the Galaxy #1 and #2, Marvel is going back to the press with a special one-shot collecting the first two critically acclaimed issues! Guardians of the Galaxy: Legacy Must-Have introduces Star-Lord and a new rag-tag team of sci-fi heroes determined to protect the cosmos and save the universe! From the acclaimed team of writers, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, featuring a brand new incredibly stunning cover from fan-favorite interior artist, Paul Pelletier – the Guardians of the Galaxy are unleashed in an out of this world book that has become one of 2008’s most popular new series!
The critics have spoken and they love Guardians of the Galaxy!
“The book is fast paced, yet packed with insight and personal interludes, tempered by glorious visual fireworks, making this seem like an under publicized big screen gem set to runaway with more box office receipts than the production studio thought it was worth…This is a summer comic at its very best.” – Doug Zawisza of ComicBookResources.com
“Guardians of the Galaxy further proves there's plenty of life in the Marvel Universe out among the stars. With a rip-roaringly good cast, trippy visuals… this series has all but cemented its place in my pull list permanently.” – Jesse Schedeen of IGN.com
“Guardians of the Galaxy is a space adventure that is fun and engaging, and definitely worth your three bucks.” – Steven M. Bari of ComicsBulletin.com
“Guardians of the Galaxy is, a tremendous, action-packed extravaganza that pulsates with entertainment and style.” – Nick Budd of ComicPants.com
“We've got highfalutin space action, and an anthropomorphic raccoon stealing the show… It also helps that this was one of those damn fun comics that you always love to run across.” – Humphrey Lee of AintItCoolNews.com
“DnA have the chops to pull off big action oriented sci-fi comic goodness like they have done on Annihilation Conquest and the Nova monthly. The art team is fantastic and should provide beautiful imagery for the duration.” – Robert Tocapina of ComicAddiction.com
Who are these members of this motley crew of extraterrestrial protectors? And how did they band together? This is your chance to find out and catch up on these sold out issues in Guardians of the Galaxy: Legacy Must-Have!

Deus ex Comica, Part 6
Deus ex Comics, Part 6: "Marvel 1985" was published over at Field's Edge today. I'm not reading Marvel's current limited series of the same name just yet (I'm waiting for the collected edition), but I've heard great things about it, and it inspired me to think about where I was in my comic reading during that era from a year-by-year perspective.

Review: Astonishing X-Men #25
Astonishing is the right word.
Warren Ellis and Simone Bianchi jump right into things in this first issue of their run. You might’ve seen some of the teaser art that’s been either released or leaked. If you’re a fan of the X-Men, and more specifically the Astonishing X-Men, you’ve probably even developed some expectations for this issue. Certainly the previous team set the bar high. Ellis and Bianchi appear set to step over that proverbial bar.
Ellis sets everything up in this first issue, giving readers both old and new, everything they need to know. From the very first page we begin to get a sense of who these characters are and how they interact. A very new status quo is set up and although tied into current continuity almost everything about this issue feels like a first issue.
Bianchi’s art is amazing. His page layouts are a revelation, actually. From the first page to the last, he consistently controls the pace of the story as well as the reader’s eye from panel to panel, and page to page. Line work, use of pattern, texture, contrast, all combining to create some truly beautiful pages.
The phrase “great jumping on point” has often been used when a new team takes over a book. Warren Ellis and Simone Bianchi have made sure that it truly applies here. Be sure not to miss Astonishing X-Men #25!

Review: Marvel Illustrated: The Three Musketeers #2
Marvel Illustrated brings Alexandre Dumas' classic swashbuckling tale to life as only Marvel knows how in this new 6-issue mini series. Writer Roy Thomas (Marvel Illustrated: The Illiad) and Artist Hugo Petrus (Marvel Illustrated: The Man in the Iron Mask) team up to tale the story of d'Artagnan and his adventures as a Musketeer apprentice. Issue #2 finds d'Artagnan learning of a plot to lure the Duke of Buckingham to Paris by the villainous Cardinal Richelieu to ruin the Queen, Anne of Austria. The Duke learns of the plot, but secretly pays a visit to the Queen before returning to England with a promise to return in 6 months. The Cardinal finds out about the visit and devises a way to prove that the Queen and Duke are involved. It's now up to d'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers, who are loyal to the Queen, to warn the Duke before their relationship is exposed. It's a race against time as the heroes travel cross county to England to reach the Duke before the Cardinal's plan succeeds, but what perils await our swashbucklers on their journey?

Review: Secret Invasion #1: Director’s Cut
Have you heard the one about the alien race who replace people around us in a subversive attempt to take over the world? By now you’ve not only heard that story, you’ve likely already read this one because you couldn’t wait for a more deluxe package (even though you knew it was coming). But, like me, now that it’s here, you too will be picking up a copy of Secret Invasion #1: Director’s Cut because the included extras make this edition too good to pass up. This 80 page book includes the 7 page previously exclusively online prelude story (rendered by the main creative team), all 40 pages of Secret Invasion #1, Bendis’ original 21 page script (‘hey kids – draw your own comic!’), a ‘Who Do You Trust’ promo image collage, 4 page Leinil Yu sketchbook, 5 page cover and variant cover gallery, 2 turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (while supplies last)!
From a waterfront pub patronized by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents the night of Captain America’s death to the Skrull home world years ago in flashback, to Stark laboratories, to S.W.O.R.D.’s orbiting space station The Peak, to the Avengers’ headquarters’, Savage Land, Raft and Cube penitentiaries, Thunderbolts Mountain, S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, to the Fantastic Four’s Baxter Building headquarters, Bendis’ story spans the breadth of the Marvel Universe and sets this epic tale into motion. The Skrulls’ comprehensive initial salvo strikes on many fronts, and fortunately Bendis lobbied for a double-sized first issue to allow such, as the scope of this story wouldn’t have developed enough momentum in a single-sized issue. The story and cover pin-ups reflect some of Yu’s best art, with appropriate credit to inker Mark Morales for bringing out the best and tightening up seemingly just enough. The inclusion of the meaningful prologue seeing print for the first time and the variant cover gallery make this edition a nice package and hard to pass up.

Review: Squadron Supreme #1
Missing from Marvel’s schedule for far too long, the Squadron Supreme makes its triumphant return this week with a new number one issue and the all-new creative team of Howard Chaykin and Marco Turini.
This new series takes places five years after the end of the Supreme Power series filling readers in on what has happened with the Squadron Supreme and Nick Fury. Chaykin starts the book off bringing everybody up to speed on the first page. By the second page he’s moving fully into his plans for the book, introducing new characters and setting up long range plots. We very quickly see how things have changed over the missing five years. Turini’s art is distinctly different from previous artist Greg Land. At times Turini’s art is reminiscent of John Romita Junior’s, while still remaining distinctly his own. Although this first issue is spent setting up the new status quo, reintroducing some old characters, and introducing new ones, readers can look forward to seeing how Chaykin plans to fill in that five-year gap.
Action packed and filled with questions, Marvel, Howard Chaykin, and Marco Turini are set to take the Squadron Supreme in new directions. If you’ve been reading the Squadron Supreme, don’t miss the next stage in the evolution of this team.

Review: Avengers/Invaders #3
Alex Ross, Jim Krueger, and Steve Sadowski continue to thrill with their third issue of Avengers/Invaders. The action picks up where it left off and the pace increases through the issue.
Ross and Krueger have created a mystery not only in how these two teams from different eras have come to meet, but also in how closely this series will be tied into current Marvel continuity. There are a few scenes in this issue that seem to tie directly into Secret Invasion with characters saying things that can be taken completely differently when Secret Invasion is taken into account. Even Bucky seems different if you’ve been following his return in the pages of Captain America. Current continuity plays a big part in this tale even if it is told as a stand alone story. However, with each passing issue that seems less and less likely. At times it seems like it should have Secret Invasion banner at the top of the cover.
Steve Sadowski’s art achieves the feel of realism without going overboard. His backgrounds give enough detail to let you know where things are taking place. It’s the close-ups and facial expressions that really impress me though. He captures the age, expressions and unique appearance of each person well.
At first glance Avengers/Invaders seemed like a stand alone tale intended to have loose ties to current Marvel continuity, but this latest issue may leave readers wondering if there’s more to it than that.

Review: Secret Invasion: Frontline #1
Taking a different approach than previous ‘Frontline’ installments, Secret Invasion: Frontline #1 contains one 23 page story rather than multiple serialized stories. Given this, the story chronologically flows more smoothly than in the past, covering a period of time from shortly before the Skrull invasion to 22 hours after it has begun.
Written by Brian Reed and penciled by Marco Castiello as part of a ‘GG Studios’ art team with Giuliano Monni, Barbara Ciardo and Amerigo Pinelli (and sporting a Juan Doe cover), this ‘Skrulls Take Manhattan’ story offers a street-level view of Marvel Heroes such as Spider-Man and the Avengers, through ordinary characters such as a high-school girl whose parents are getting a divorce, a taxi driver having a bad day who’s in need of a divorce, and an overly inspirational, take charge ER doctor who could moonlight as a supermodel, all of whose lives are interrupted by the Skrull’s frontal assault on the streets and sidewalks of New York. Reed cleverly presents an Avengers contribution to city tourism, as well as the little considered impact non-registered heroes can have on regular folks, also including a familiar face in Ben Urich, who, as usual, is in the thick of things.
The art is a more than adequate surprise, with the colorists, while using an ‘animation style’, not afraid to use contrasting colors like a comic book can support. Of the book’s 9 advertisements, more than half are full page ‘house ads’ promoting other Marvel titles.

Review: Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #41
Spidey’s not married, no recognizable supporting cast in sight…., could this be the BND Spider-Man?
Nope, it’s Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #41, an all-ages 22 page straightforward romp pitting Peter and Spidey against the Man Bull (who is looking suspiciously like Ravage 2099 after Stan’s status quo was abandoned).
I usually buy these all-ages books, skim through them and stockpile them for my kiddo in a few years as transition comics he can ‘have his way with’ before he can freely handle the regular line ‘good’ stuff. Sometimes the art in Marvel Adventures books is embarrassingly sub-par, but here the art by Ryan Stegman and Gary Martin is crisp, clean and simple as it seems the all-ages line demands, but at the same time isn’t condescending (and should really be the standard for the Marvel Adventures titles). Mark Sumerak manages to tell a timeless, simple action-oriented Spidey story set in a past that could be as current as yesterday without stooping to contrived Ipod or American Idol references, and even manages a Galactus cameo. The colors are bright, eye-catching and, well…. colorful.
This issue of course also includes a cute Chris Giarrusso one-pager, this month featuring the Hulk. As a whole, this month this book succeeds at what it is intended to be: it is a fine starter comic book to pass along to any lucky kid aged 5 to 11 years old or so.
