Review: Captain America #40

Wow!

Ed Brubaker has had an amazing run on Captain America so far. He’s done what fans have said should never be done, brought back Bucky, and people are eating it up. He’s reached into the past and brought back other characters from Captain America’s history, as well. Each issue builds on what came before. Each character reintroduced makes sense and fits in to the story Brubaker is weaving. The term weaving truly applies here, as Brubaker is creating a multilayered story being told from multiple directions.

It’s difficult to fight the temptation to flip rapidly through the pages because the pace of the story is so fast. Time should be taken to enjoy these pages though. Steve Epting isn’t breaking new ground with an experimental style or trying new things with page layout, but from panel to panel the action progresses drawing the viewer’s eyes through the page. He’s not trying to blow you away with how many different ways he can break up the page, he’s telling the story in an artful and unobtrusive manner. His art works wonderfully with Brubaker’s storytelling.

Superheroes, espionage, adventure, and plot twists all well paying homage to things that have gone before. If you’re a fan of superhero comics you should be reading this book. If you’re a fan of good comics in general, you should be reading this book.

Highly recommended.

Preview: Captain America #37

The New Captain America Is Seeing Red (Skull, That Is)!

Act Three of the epic “Death Of Captain America” storyline begins right here, as Eisner-winning writer Ed Brubaker takes things from bad to worse for the new Captain America! Acclaimed artists Steve Epting and Jackson Guice join Brubaker for Captain America #37, as the Red Skull targets the very soul of America with his latest gambit! As James “Bucky” Barnes must adjust to the new mantle once worn by his mentor, he must also search for the kidnapped Sharon Carter — whose jaw dropping discovery last issue may change the entire direction of Captain America!

Named Marvel’s top series by IGN.Com, who gushed “Captain America has consistently defied modern superhero series conventions… We honestly feel sorry for you if you're missing out on this series,” this series continues to draw more acclaim with each issue.

Troy Brownfield of Newsarama.com said, “I’d like to see Brubaker complete his vision. And from where I sit, that vision continues to be smart, action-packed, well-considered, well-drawn, and just plain good comics.”

With the last three issues selling out quickly at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level), Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on all issues of Captain America. What does Red Skull have planned? Did Sharon Carter really see what she thought she saw? And can Bucky last as the new Captain America? Find out in Captain America #37!

There will be another batch of sneak peeks for next week available soon.

By Matt Fraction & Ed Brubaker (writers) and Tonci Zonjic, David Aja, & Kano (artists)

War Is Hell: The First Flight of the Phantom Eagle #1
By Garth Ennis (writer) and Howard Chaykin (artist)

Iron Man #27
By Daniel & Charles Knauf (writers), Carlo Pagulayan (pencils), and Jeffrey Huet (inks)

Initial thoughts:

I still stand by my earlier statement that Guice needs to be seen more. His Captain America is insane and I love it. This issue does not let you catch your breath from earlier issues. Franklin Richards is a guilty pleasure. Two words to sum up Iron Fist: "whoa" and "nelly". I wasn't sure what to expect with Phantom Eagle and I was pleasantly surprised with what I ended up with. This is a very good first issue. Finally, it's not an easy job being Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Thanks to Marvel for the previews.

The Atlas Era Hero Revival continues with the adventures of the comics’ most famous trio of Communist conquering heroes: Captain America, the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner! Beginning with the Big Three’s anthology adventures in Men’s Adventures, we then dive headlong into Captain America’s complete 1954 solo series. Illustrated by Bullpen legend John Romita in some of his very first super hero stories, you’ll see Cap and Bucky fight Fifth Columnists, Commie spies and even the Soviet Electro! Next up, it’s the Human Torch and Toro! Returned from his slumber by an atomic bomb, the Torch has rejoined his young sidekick in a battle to clean up threats as amazing and entertaining as vampires, killer robots and his 1950s nemesis, the Vulture. Their crime-fighting adventures even take on a global purchase, stretching all the way to the 38th Parallel and Communist Korea! And finally, for a quick taste of what’s to come in Atlas Era Heroes’ next volume, comes an assortment of Bill Everett’s lavishly drawn tales of the lord of the Atlantis, Namor the Sub-Mariner. Considered by many to be the definitive take on the character, Everett’s ’50s Sub-Mariner is nothing less than treasure from the deep! We’d be remiss to leave you without a bevy of historical bonuses, including a rare Human Torch tale that went unprinted for more than a decade, original artwork, Atlas Era house ads and an introduction by Hero Revival scholar extraordinaire Roy Thomas.
