Review: Powers #29

Sent undercover to help solve a string of murders of young girls, Retrogirl is captured by a group of Powers Junkies who find her powers particularly appealing. Her only chance for survival rests in the hands of Detective Deena Pilgrim. There's just one little problem. Detective Pilgrim is currently in police custody and is being charged with murder. Can Pilgrim convince her ex-partner and the powers that be that she is the only one who can find Retrogirl before it's too late? Or will Retrogirl find herself to be the next victim to join the other murdered girls at the city's morgue?

Wow! I left this book around issue 30 of the first volume due to dropping comics all together for a while. At that time, this book was at the top of my must read stack. Issue 29 is the first issue I've picked up since dropping the book and let me say it doesn't seem to have lost steam one bit! Bendis continues to amaze me with his life-like dialog. Although I'm loving his Marvel Universe work, this book is a very welcome escape from the restrictions of his younger audience titles. Bendis delivers an excellent adult read without letting sex or violence become the story's main focus. And Michael Avon Oeming's art could not be any more spectacular! With each panel, Oeming lets you know exactly what each person is feeling. The amount of emotion Oeming is able to bring out of each character is truly amazing! Take away the dialog and the look on each characters face is enough to tell the story. After reading this issue, I can't believe I was ever able to walk away from this book. This is one title that will be making a return to the top of my stack!

Marvel Noise Episode 34
