Marvel Noise Episode 42

Going to San Diego? I'm not... But Phenomenal Pat Loika will be there! And he's also here! In not one, but TWO segments. First, he offers up this week's new releases and later, he returns to give us the rundown on what Marvel has planned for the convention this week! In between we hear from evaD (Bring 'em Back), Steve Raker (from his Comics Bunker), and Chris "Equinox" Chavez and Mike Sims both sharing some thoughts on recent reads. And our host pops up once or twice.

Comics mentioned include Immortal Iron Fist, Daredevil, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men: Legacy, She-Hulk, Wolverine: First Class, X-Factor, and Universal War One.

Review: Immortal Iron Fist #17

I'm sold.

Iron Fist has been a favorite of mine for years. Going back to the John Byrne, Keith Pollard, Mark Bright, Chris Claremont, and Jim Owsley (now Christopher Priest) days (and everyone in between) to Leinil Yu, Michael Lark, David Aja, Ed Bruabaker (in Daredevil), Brian Michael Bendis, and Brubaker and Matt Fraction in recent months, Danny Rand is a likable character. And it doesn't look like that's about to change.

If anything, I'm more excited about what's to come than what has come to pass. Brubaker and Fraction, along with Aja and a whole slew of some damn fine artists - John Severin, Heath, Khari Evans, Dan Brereton, Howard Chaykin, to name some - fleshed out not so much Danny Rand, but the Iron Fist and how it is immortal, even if the bearer or the weapon is not. Most definitely not.

So now, with Duane Swierczynski and Travel Foreman (with Heath providing some art for the Iron Fist from 1878) taking over the title, it looks like we're not gonna have a chance to come up for air. Building on what Brubaker and Fraction starting in the first sixteen issues, Swierczynski picks up right where we left off last issue. But before that, we're hit with two pages that make us wonder, "what the hell you talkin' about, kid?", and just ensured the fact that I'm hooked. And I can't overlook the cliffhanger we're left with. And in between, there are some really good character moments, not just with Danny, but with those close to him as well.

Foreman's art isn't what we're used to on this title. And for that, I'm happy. The stylized artwork makes me smile. There's energy and life on these pages, and considering the character, that's a must. I like what Marvel's doing when it comes to the art in some of their books recently. Larry Stroman penciling X-Factor, Vincenzo Cucca penciling She-Hulk, Adam Pollina's work on Angel: Revelations; art that's all very different than what, say, Bryan Hitch, Ariel Olivetti, Greg Land, and Steve Kurth are doing. And I'm enjoying it immensely.

A favorite character, a favorite writer, and some bitchin' art, make this title a keeper. Immortal Iron Fist #17 is a great jumping on point. This is damn good comics.
